Whether you can do this depends upon where you are on your program at your primary school (most schools require that you spend your last year in residence there) and whether or not the other school is in need of additional students. If they are overcrowded, they won’t take you on such a temporary basis. However, if this isn’t the case, there are a couple of possibilities. First, if your primary school is part of a consortium of universities, you may be able to be part of an official exchange program. Ask your Dean’s office about this. If you are just trying to go to some unrelated school to be in a particular location for a semester, you need to get approval from both schools before you go there. You will need to contact their Admissions Office to find out about how to get temporary admission to the school, and probably will have to have your transcripts sent. You will also need to make sure that the classes you take there will transfer back to your other school. A lot of people do this in summer, but it is far less common during the school year.

If you are on Financial aid you need to get on the web page and put in the school code for both colleges. Once you are awarded you will need to contact the schools and decline the financial aid for the part of the year that you will not be attending their school. After that you can registrar for the classes at the school you will be attending first then after that semester you registrar for the other school. It sounds complicated but I do it a lot. Plus I work at one of the colleges that I attend so if you need help just ask. k. good luck on school.

American University offers semester programs at one of its campuses. New York University offers them on its main campus, I think (I wanted to do that one).
Most major (and I mean the big ones) have some sort of program like that. Credits will transfer.

if you want to study abroad, most people usually do it through their current college because they do all the dirty work.
