Hospital volunteer work for medical school?
I volunteer my time every saturday for 4 hours at a local hospital. I plan to keep doing so. I work as an ICU volunteer, and sit by a desk infront of the ICU unit and I let family members and visitors of patients in and out of the unit. I hear volunteer work at hospitals is a good idea for people thinking of going to medical school, but do you think the work I am doing can be considered ‘hospital volunteer work? It’s not like I work at the emergency room, so is the letting visitors in and out of the ICU ward good volunteer experience in the hospital setting? Will medical schools like this type of work, or do they want people who worked in emergency rooms and have hands on experience working with patients?

Volunteer service in general will be commended when it is time for you to apply. If you are currently in high school, your medical profession will begin with pre-med which is commendable by a four year bachelors degree. Following this, you can go to medical school. No matter what kind of work toy have done, It still will be taken into consideration. I think what you have done has shown at least your commitment to the field, leading to a respectful overview of your interest level. They will definitely embrace the type of work you have done

The intent of having applicants perform volunteer work is to dispel the romantic ideations about medicine created by Hollywood. It’s also an indication of sincere interest and motivation.
Volunteers do not have any patient care responsibilities.
You’re in a perfect spot, so keep it up!

if you’re a volunteer, the hospital staff isnt going to put you in any “hands on” situations like in the emergency room. you’re only a volunteer with possibly no work experience yet! so i think what you are doing, which is helping the hospital out, is a good start. it will look good because you’re still helping out!

Negative, it will look good, volunteer work looks real good on paper and shows you have initiative, just try not to be over qualified for a job because they hate that.
