Think of it as fractions, such as 1/2 = 4/8. Now suppose you know that your two fractions are equal, like this example, but you don’t know what one of the numbers is.

In this case, 1/2 = x/8.

If you multiply 1 x 8 and divide it by 2–you get the correct answer–4. (On paper, you multiply the top of the first fraction by the bottom of the second fraction, then you divide by the bottom of the first fraction.)

Your problem becomes 5/24 = x/288.

Multiply 5 x 288 and divide by 24. Your answer will be the height of the tree.

Another proportion question:

Hint: Anytime you have 3 numbers and you are trying to find the 4th number, it is a proportion.

See my other answer for proportion rule/method:

288 X 5= 1440/24= 60
