High school English Lit classes?

My crappy public high school did not provide me with a good education and I just realized that.

I’m in college right now and everyone already read Beowulf, Romeo & Juliet, Dickens, the Romantic Poets, etc in high school. I didn’t get to read any of that in HS.

Did you read all that stuff at your HS?

In High School, I read all of the books you have mentioned, but then again, I went to a top 20 private school in the US.

in 9th Grade- I read Romeo and Juliet, Tale of Two Cities by Dickens, Old Man and the Sea, and Catcher in the Rye.

In 10th Grade- I read Macbeth, Othello, The Oddyssey, Candide, 1984, and books by Chaucer (another famous author such as Dickens and Shakespeare), Romanitc Poetry, Classical Poetry, WWI Poetry, etc.

In 11th Grade- I read Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Books by F Scott Fitzgerald, and more books on Shakespeare.

So to answer your question, Yes I did read the books you listed. If you are in College, you probrably won’t have time to read all those books even on break. So, if you want it is never late to read those books because they are really interesting.

My high school is one of the best (public) schools in the the state and I can tell you that I didn’t read all of that stuff. We did read Beowulf our senior year and we covered some romantic poets. But we only read excerpts from Romeo & Juliet and didn’t talk about Dickens at all.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I doubt that your professors will test you on things that you haven’t read, so as long as you keep up with the assignments you’ll be fine.

I assure you that “everyone” hasn’t read everything. I’m sure that you’ve read stuff they haven’t. I wouldn’t worry about it, but if it really bothers you you can always read some of that stuff on your free time (though I wouldn’t because most of that stuff is pretty dull)

Haha that’s Public School for ya, but not all of them suck. I read Romeo & Juliet in 10th grade and a lot of Romantic Poets, also things like Catcher and the Rye, Hamlet, The Scarlet Letter, 1984, etc. I went to public school all my life. I’m doing pretty great in college

Yes, I read all that in high school. Part of our state’s required curriculum includes Shakespeare, Dickens, Beowulf, etc.

English is usually my favorite class, but not this year. I have one of the worst teachers ever. She assigns us reading, then forgets about it, so we almost never have in depth discussions like I want. She plays solitaire while we do tedious grammar worksheets.
