Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, SJ, president of Ateneo de Manila University, said, “As the Philippines moves toward modernizations, science and technology are essential, democratic ideas are essential. Whether we like it or not, global influence through business, technology, our overseas workers, dominate our consciousness more and more.
“The challenge is how we are to remain who we are, how we are to remain community, how we are to find meaning in a world that seems to threaten our fundamental self and values. It is a challenge of mythos [on the origins of life, the foundations of culture and to the deepest levels of the human mind] being able to hold together the tensions brought about by the power of modern logos [rational, pragmatic and scientific thought that enable people
to function well in the world],” Nebres said.
Nebres spoke on “Church and Society in the Country in the 26th Annual Scientific Meeting on July 14 and 15 held at the Manila Hotel.
He noted that emerging in the Church in the Philippines are “powerful movements that bring people together toward community and identity, particularly the charismatic-based movements. Some of these movements remain
inward-turned and risk becoming closed-in fundamentalist groups.” Others, he said, respond to the call of the Gospels to be their brother’s and sister’s keeper and are moving to help the poor—and thus “helping create the social revolution needed for modernization.”
“We would like to highlight progress made and challenges faced by movements seeking to build meaning—structures founded on the Christian Gospels and at the same time responsive to the need to reach out to the poor and build community among all Filipinos,” Nebres said.
He said this is a search for Christian meaning—structures that will bridge the cultural divide between the modernized Christianity of many middle-class Filipinos and the traditional Christianity of the masses.
“In building that bridge, the Church can then play a critical role in both moving the Philippines forward toward modernization and at the same time keep our sense of identity, community and meaning whole,” he said.
The 26th NAST Annual Scientific Meeting with the theme “On Being and Becoming: Where We Are and Where We want to Be,” discussed pressing issues in the country, such as on church and society, humanities, education,
economy, agriculture, natural resources, and health research and practice.
The Annual Scientific Meeting is a leading forum for the presentation of new scientific and technological findings, research and information by individual scientists, led by the members of the Academy. Resolutions or
policy recommendations will be referred to concerned government agencies for consideration and appropriate action.
NAST is the country’s highest advisory body to the government on S&T and related matters. It is also mandated to recognize outstanding achievements and provide meaningful incentives to those engaged in scientific and
technological research.
