HELP PLEASE!!! School supply shopping?

Hello, I am going on a 7-day trip tomorrow, and I will be back next Wednesday, on the 1st, and I was planning on doing my school supply shopping for next year on the following Saturday (August 4). However, people always talk about the “August Rush”, so I’m not sure if I should go then…I’m planning on just buying the basics, until I get a final list of the school supplies I need, since that will be on the first day of school, and I don’t want to buy EVERYTHING then. Please tell me if you think the 4th is too late. Do you think they will still have a wide selection?

Serious answers only please.

Thank you for your answers in advance : )

P.S. For your information, I will not be shopping at Wal*Mart, where I hear it gets super-crowded; I will be shopping at Office Depot and Office Max.

If you’re shopping anywhere BUT Walmart you should be fine. The only place I noticed you had to go at strange hours was walmart, it was like a stampeed! But going early is always better because you catch those back to school sales!

You should definitely NOT wait to go school supply shopping at the last minute, especially not at office supply stores. The best thing to do is to buy the basics wherever your trip is. There has to be a store around there, and if you get a few things to last you the first week, you should be okay.

Here are some other alternatives to Office Depot and Max that won’t have as much traffic:

Dollar General

Walgreens > most drug stores are not crowded

Rite Aid

Value City

Big Lots

And you should get these basic supplies to last your whole first week of school:

pack of pens and pencils

3-ring binder

college-ruled paper

3-5 subject notebook

I hope this helps!

Rather than buying EVERYTHING at once…i’d suggest you tp break down your shopping into bite sized pieces.

Try to figure out what would be almost guaranteed to be on your list.Like the kind of stationery, a school bag, a lunch box if you take one and stuff like that.

Once you have the basic list of your essentials, you can go out and get all that stuff.

After that if you want to get all your books earlier and start to go through them, you can consult your seniors and ask what their list looked like.

After looking through it, you should be able to figure out what items have a high probability of being on the current inventory!

So you can then go and buy those things.

For the very specific items, you should wait till the last.

Shopping in parts ensures that you dnt burn a hole in your pocket and it gives you more time to organize all the new stuff you’ve brought home.

Apart from that, make sure you take advantage of all the sales in and around the time you purchase stuff.

Hope this helped you!

Since you are doing your shopping at an ‘Office Supply Store’ rather than a ‘general store’ you will actually be in ‘fine style’ if you postpone your shopping until Aug. 4th. There may be some ‘good sale items’ that you’ll miss out on, but since you are looking for ‘just the basics’ you can ALWAYS find them at either of the store chains you mentioned … and also seriously consider ordering ‘through the catalogue’ and either picking it up at the store or (if you spend at least $50, it’s ‘free’) have them delivered to your door.

I think you will be ok to wait until the 4th to do your shopping. It will get bad the week or so before school starts. I don’t blame you for not shopping at Wally World…I myself avoid it at all cost! You might want to consider Target though…they seem to be easier to navigate through. To totally avoid a shopping frenzy though, you might want to check with your school’s PTO and see if you can order supplies through them. That is what they do at the school I teach at. You pay one price and they deliver the supplies to your classroom. Hope this helps…have a great trip!

You will still get very good deals at OfficeMax and OfficeDepot, and go to Target- it’s not as crowded as Wal*Mart. If you go in early August, you will not get the rush, you will still get good deals and they are in full stock of items. Just avoid late August.

office depot may not be as hectic, but the wait is unreal because they don’t have as many cashiers.
