The sentence is negative. The writer thought the movie was pretentious. He says the director tried to make the movie look intellectual stimulating, but he missed the mark. However, the director thinks he hit the target.

He insults the movie, and the director. It’s sort of like saying he threw together a horrible, gaudy, tacky outfit and went out thinking and acting like he was dressed exceptionally well.

Hope that helps.

It is giving a bad opinion. Also the first half of the sentence has big words, and the second half has smaller words. I advise you take one path like one sentence with big words or one sentence with small words.

It’s a bit snide, and a bad opinion.

I would advise: stop trying to sound like a clever critic, and make darn sure your audience understands your view. Clearly communicate your points, and move on.

the film is not as smart as it pretends to be.

by removing the word “half” the sentence makes sense, but still doesn’t change the meaning.

it is a negative review.

It is giving a bad opinion because it says:

“that is not half as smart as it pretends to be”

Looks like a bad opinion to me. However…not as bad as your spelling or grammar.

nah – it isn’t a positive review of the movie. it is saying that the director was trying to make a ‘smart’ movie, but that it wasn’t
