I’m from Illinois and have some friends who have attended U of I. Two of them dropped out the first semester and ended up going to a smaller school. You have to have good grades and test scores to get in, and I’ve heard that even for really smart people it is very challenging. I’m sure it depends on what field of study you’re going into as well. It is good for science and engineering degrees..It’s definitely a respectable school, as are all of the colleges you’ve listed. I’m sure there is lots of drinking on and off campus too, but you’ll find that at pretty much any college. That kind of makes up a large part of the social scene, I guess. There isn’t really a lot to do in Urbana, its pretty much a typical IL college town.
I would suggest going onto the schools’ websites and touring any colleges you are interested in. That is how you will find the most information.

I don’t know about the others but Virginia Tech is a great school. Blacksburg is a great town. There’s something for everybody in Blacksburg, you can walk just about everywhere in town. VT has a lot of opportunities, but it really depends on what you want to major in.

One consideration is whether or not you live in any of the states where these colleges are located. In state tuition is much much lower than out of state.
