Its a plural noun, but singular in construction.
Like you can’t say…the great outdoor…..
and you don’t say an outdoors restaurant.

Singular. In that context, it’s one thing. Technically, it’s the whole outside world (one thing) beyond a person’s own limited “outdoor”.
If you want to avoid this grammatical dilemma, you can just substitute “natural world” for “great outdoors”.
