Gray and grey are different spellings of the same word, and both are used throughout the English-speaking world. But gray is more common in American English, while grey is more common in all the other main varieties of English.

Gray is used primarily in the United States and other areas that use US English. Grey is used in Great Britain and areas that use UK English. A exceptions is: grey/gray used in a proper name, such as Greyhound.

Grey is the British spelling; gray is the American spelling (like colour/color, aluminium/aluminum).

If you are American, and it’s not a name, you should write gray; however, if you are not from America, you should spell it grey.

Just like with theater/theatre – color/colour and other words, some are proper in American English and some aren’t.

So, if you were born in the united states or you learned to speak, read, write, and think in the USA, you should write gray. If you weren’t born or raised in the U.S, then write grey. As an English teacher, it annoys me when my students write grey because it’s improper in the U.S.

Gray is the American way of spelling of the colour that you get when you mix black and white and Grey is the British way of spelling the same thing… it’s the same with flavor and flavour, color and colour… you get the idea.
