Going to college for the 1st time by the time I’m 24 yrs old…finance options?

I’m currently 22 and I made a mistake of getting a cosmetology licences during high school (just so I wouldn’t have to go to college). Truth is after 4 years, I hate the career. I’ve decided to go after my dream of working in law enforcement. I want to go back to school by the time I’m 24.

Here’s the situation; I want to go to a certain 2 year tech school and major in Criminal Justice, then enroll into a Law Enforcement Academy after I graduate. I haven’t taken the SAT or the ACT (meaning I’ll have to start studying hard even before I apply for the college). I did earn a Hope Scholarship during high school, but after 4 years, that’s probably not an option anymore.

My question revolves around how to pay for it. The college offers a Lottery program that will cut tuition greatly if I qualify. If not, I’m looking at roughly $15,000. What are the best finance options for someone in my position? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Right now, unless you have a child or dependent, are married or a veteran of the armed forces, you will still need to use your parent information on your FAFSA application (www.fafsa.ed.gov). To use only your income, you’ll need to wait until the year you turn 24 to apply for federal &/or state financial aid. I would also recommend looking at scholarships online through Fastweb.com as well as through the schools you are considering attending.

You might also want to double check with the schools you are planning on attending because based on your age, you may not be required to have the SAT or ACT scores–Once you have gotten your certificate or 2 year degree from the technical school, you would be treated as a transfer student and would not be required to have those scores.

Most states do have a state grant that is based on your eligibility for the Federal Pell Grant which is based off of your Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) which is equivilant to @ 30% of your annual income.

Your final option would be to apply for a student loan – but I would recommend taking out the Federal loan before taking out a private loan which will have a higher interest rate and be based on your credit as well as it might make you start paying it back immediately instead of after you graduate. I hope this helps.

Get real! You think 24 is too old to go to college??? My friend got her BA when she was 57! I didn’t start college until I was 35. Professors thoroughly enjoy the “older” students because they bring live experience along with their high school diploma or GED. Make an appointment with a guidance counselor at your community college to find out what is required to become a dermatologist – there is no charge. Do not go to a private trade school to get this kind of info – counselors’s jobs at those kinds of shcools depend on how many students they sign up. I wish you the best. Enjoy.

Join the military or at least the national guard,, rite now there getting a bad rap because of the Iraq war but just because you join does not mean you are getting an all expenses paid vacation over there there are several options available and many that you can even apply towards whatever career field you are pursuing (from piano players to pie makers),, and the experience is priceless you meat people from all around the world and get to travel to .(without even having to pay a cent)!! consider you’re options be paying off youre college loans and living pay check well into you’re 30s or 40s,, or have you’re degree in what you want by the time you’re 30, be well travelled have friends all across the US and the world. and be debt free. i myself did the military route and have no regrettes. ill be getting my masters in a year without a cent in student loans or debt and I have a brand new car that fully paid for to top it off,, and im only 23( a year and a half behind my pears,, but they don’t have as many friends or have been as many places as me and they have a crap-load of debt,, there all ways complaining about to me as well) So weigh you’re options and go chat with a recruiter and if the Military is just not you’re thing or you don’t qualify (for health reasons or sump tin) @ least you get a free lunch out of it,, and you cant beat that.

If you did take the ACT or SAT, you can apply for the pell grant. It helps pay for your schooling. Also, look for different grants. There are tons of grants out there, just need to get you hands on them. Some require you to write an essay. I would apply for numerous grants in order to increase your chances of getting one. If can also consider work study, where you work around the school and they pay part of your tuition.

Good Luck.
