Global Leadership Adventures High School Program? Anybody ever heard?

Yeah, Global Leadership Adventures was written up in the New York Times a few months ago, as one of the smarter community service trips for high school kids. It looked pretty good.

Hello! My name is Sofia. I went on the GLA trip to India. It was absolutely incredible and completely safe. The primary focus was volunteering but we had lots of opportunities to get to know the country and did lots of tours on the weekends. It was a life changing experience and I would totally recommend it. The mentors are amazing and are focused on making sure you have the time of your life. The facilities were completely commendable and the trip overall was planned extremely well. I stayed for 21 days and I definitely wish I would’ve stayed longer. I just looked at their site, and like other such organisations this is an outrageous fraud. What do you think that countries with high unemployment need help with from foreign school kids? Years ago there used to be an organisation called ‘csv’ which had the reputation of supplying ‘underdeveloped people for underdeveloped countries’, their recruiting drives had the same mental pressure techniques as any mind bending cult. You were supposed to be ‘untested’ and unworthy, an immature member of an overprivileged section of the world’s population. But at the same time you were part of an elite, with untapped powers of the mind which you could bring to the unenlightened but deserving simpletons of foreign parts. This would be a life changing experience, you would have done Good in the eyes of cosmic scrutiny and it would Help You In Your Career. If you want to do good works abroad, remember that this is not a new impulse, it was at its height in many countries during Victorian times, but at least they were clear about what ‘good works’ they were doing and why. Otherwise do ‘good works’ at home as a volunteer hospital porter. The best way to help a foreign country is to go there on holiday, and increase its tourist income.
