Getting a job and college?

Does getting a job count as extracurricular activities? Do colleges care if a student worked or not? Would I have a better chance of getting into college if I worked and kept my grades up?

Admissions officers aren’t wholly focused on grades and test scores. Even at highly selective/competitive colleges, admissions representatives prefer to see well-rounded students. This means they’re going to take a look at everything you’ve done outside of school (volunteer work, paid work, after school activities, in-school non-academic activities, sports, the arts, etc., etc.) as well as everything you’ve done while in school (grades, overall GPA, test scores, actual portfolios, AP/CLEP exams, etc.). They want to see you as a whole person, not as some number on a piece of paper. You want to demonstrate to the admissions office that you have the ability and wherewithal to succeed in life.

Best of luck!

Yes, but make sure that the job is not the only activity. As far as grades go, don’t let your grades slide as a result of working. Colleges care a lot more about the grades and other academic criteria than anything else. I don’t think that having a job and earnign good grades will help you a ton, but at least the job counts as an activity. Don’t run yourself down working, though,

Most applications list a section of out of school activities. Thats where you list that you worked and yes, schools do consider that in applicants. But you should not substitute a job for extracurriculars. Schools like to see a student that takes part in the school and in their community.
