from high school to RN?

so I will be finishing high school soon, and all my grades are pretty good, I have the right pre-requistes to be in a CA college/university. My plan for the future is to be an RN. I wanted to know how many years would it take to achieve my RN degree. After high school, do I still need the years of basic college education, or can I apply to an RN program straight away that would only take 4 years?

-thanks

Humboldt State University in Northern California has a BS Degree in nursing that will take you 4 to 5 years to complete. Community Colleges usually have a 2 to 3 year program, but they are not bachelors degree.

I would recommend you check out this link if interested in Humboldt State’s Nursing program.

Most RN programs want you to take general ed courses (even at community colleges, you usually have to take chemistry, bio, anatomy, sociology, statistics, before you’ll even be eligible to apply to an RN program).

Also, rn programs are fairly competitive, but it’s a great field.

If you’re interested in Oregon at all, University of Portland (a spendy, private, catholic school) has a pretty sweet deal with Providence St. Vincent (one of the hospitals in the portland metro area). If you have good grades for your first two years, and apply to be part of the providence scholars program (it might have a different name, can’t remember), the hospital will pay for the last 2-3 years of schooling AND guarantee you a job, you just have to work for them for a few years afterwards.

My point here is, I bet other colleges have similar arrangements with local hospitals.

Also, while you can be an RN in 2 years, I’ve heard your opportunities are limited in comparison to someone that has a bachelor’s degree.

RN is usually a 3 year program or an excelerated 2 year program. Depends on the school.
