Fashion merchandising majors??

I am an upcoming senior in high school and i am looking for a college to attend in Virginia. I want to do fashion merchandising and there arent alot of schools to choose from in VA with that major. Virginia Commonwealth Uni is one school, is this a good school? It is in Richmond so i was thinking that a large city would be a good place to study fashion. Also Virginia Tech has a fashion program but i cant figure out if you can study JUST merchandising because the website makes it seem like you have to design fashion also, which i would suck at. If they do have merchandising would VT be a better choice??? Please help!
