FASFA what do you do if your parents won’t give the info you need?
What do I do. My parents are divorced, I have lived out on my own for 2 years. I want to turn my life around and go to college, but I have burned all my bridges. My parents won’t give me their info for the fasfa, and the college I want to go to says I am past the age to be declared emancipated. Can I stll fill out the fafsa if my parents won’t give any info? HELP!

Based on your question it seems like you are still considered a dependent per FAFSA rules. No you really need their info. If there were an exception the school would be the best source to tell you how to proceed with that.

Contact the FAFSA people directly with your question. Apparently, the people at the college you want to go to don’t know what they are talking about. I can’t remember exactly what you need to do, but I know it is possible to get around not having your parents info if you don’t live with them.
Try this:
“For questions regarding problems or difficulties using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the Web, or specific questions about the FAFSA, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243) or 1-319-337-5665. If you are hearing-impaired and have questions, please contact the TTY line at 1-800-730-8913.”

You would need to talk to a financial aid worker at your school. If you truely have no contact with your parents and can find ways of documenting this, they MAY be able to allow to an exemption. Unfortunately, it is usually only done in cases where there is some kind of court order or legal documentation. I was a ward of the state and had to bring in court papers and write a request for an exception.

You may not get anything anyway- if your parents make too much you wont get any regardless of the fact that you live on your own. If you have a child then you don’t need them to fill out anything. If you are going to grad school you dont need them either. Try to convince your poorer parent (whichever one makes the least) to give them your info or send it to them to figure out because you are trying to get money for school. Its really sad and selfish that they wont help their daughter get an education and a better life- play guilt if you think it would work. Look into institutional scholarships- it may be too late because most are due in March but you may be able to get one for next year too. Good luck

How old are you? If you are after the age of 25 then you can file as a independent. The best thing to do is go to the finanical aide office at your school and ask them for some help/advice.

You have to wait until 24 to start school since your parents won’t give you the information they need. Financial aid do not declare students as independent (without their parents income) until they are 24.

If your parents arent giving you any money, then they cannot be claiming you on thier tax returns. Therefore, you can file the FAFSA as an independent, and not worry about your parents info at all.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem. You can either wait until you are 24 to go to school or try to take out a personal education loan. Try the citi assist loans.

You need to fill out the financial information. If they won’t tell you the information, ask them if they will fill out that section on their own. Tell them the ID and password (if you’re comfortable with that) and have them fill out their financials on their own.
