FAFSA help…housing “with parent” or “off campus”?

I’m fillng out this FAFSA form and im up to question 97 on housing. I am most likely going to be living with my parents while attending school, but i need as much money as i can get for tuition.

1)Will putting “off campus” get me more financial aid than putting the “lives with parent” option?

2)If i did put “off campus”, will i be asked to prove that i pay rent?

3) What if i contribute to the rent while living with my parents, would my financial aid increase?

Also, i am considered to be an independant student.

Thanks for the help! 10 points for answering all 3 questions!

first, if you are considered independent you are either 25+, married, or in armed forces. anyone under the age of 25 and unmarried is dependent even if you do not receive any aid from your parents.

1. putting “off campus” will get more aid than living with a parent because you would have more expenses, therefore less available to spend on schooling.

2. you will be asked to state your expenses if you live off campus. they will not ask for a lease but you would have to show what your expenses are. if you are not honest and it is found out, you would not be eligible for any additional aid for school and would have to pay back what you had already used so i wouldn’t lie on the application. you would need another address to show you do not live with your parents and may be asked to present an utility bill for that address.

3. if you live with your parents, the fact that you pay rent will not effect your award.

Putting off campus or with parents on the FAFSA is going to change your cost of attendance. Every school has to set a budget for what the cost of attendence is including transportation, tuition, room and board, etc. If you are attending a school that packages you up tot he total of your budget, this will make you eligible for more aid that you can take to cover your cost of attendance. This is also the number that you can’t go over in your combined FA ( including grants and loans). If you do, you will be overawarded.

2. You will not have to “prove” your residency.

3. You financial aid will not increase if you pay housing cost to your parents. The budget numbers are set automatically by the school as an average for a typical student.

Off campus gives you more money than living with parents.

You will not be asked to prove where you live.

Your financial aid will not change after you say you live off campus.

You have to jumpt through a tremendous hoop to prove you are an independent student.

If you receive a grant, your aid will be reduced off campus in most schools. Call your Fin Aid office before you decide.

1) Living with your parents will minimize your getting more funding.

2)No, if you do however need that kind of paperwork, run a search on any search engine and type in ‘Lease Agreements, [your state]’ Make up a lease agreement and fill it out.

3)Contributing to rent will be considered an ‘expense’ because you are living on your own.

You have been given conflicting answers because the situation varies by school. For most schools, only your loan eligibilty is affected. They will likely check with housing, so there is no point in lying. The school MIGHT consider your rent, but probably not. Only the financial aid office at your school can give you the correct answer.
