“Does marching band look really good on a college application?”?

It depends on the college you are applying to and the kind of major you are considering. Obviously, if you are applying to (for example) Oberlin College’s music conservatory or the University of Southern California, which takes its marching band VERY seriously (it’s a nationally known, much-awarded program), then participation in marching band will be important. Even better is if you are an officer—drum major, section leader—or have won your own awards in performance tournaments, competitions and recitals. The point isn’t merely that you were in marching band, choir, or the varsity team: what you are trying to show college admission boards is that you have leadership potential or a talent that makes you stand out from the other applicants. They also look for students who are “well-rounded,” not just the guys with SAT scores of 1600 and straight As. (Those just prove you are good in the classroom: they say nothing about your participation in the ‘real world.’) Don’t forget to get good recommendation letters from your band or choir director or coach. Those are also important.

I work in college admissions and am a graduate student, so I know a little about getting into college.

Anything that shows that you participated in school activities look great on college applications. If you plan to do marching band try to fit in some other clubs to just so colleges know you’re an involved student. 🙂

No better than any random activity on a college application– unless you’re on All-States’ or something equally prestigious as a performer/ athlete.

No extracurricular is necessarily better than another, unless you plan on pursuing a band scholarship.
