Does any one knows what a MEME is?

I am doing a computer related project and found several similarities in the computed outcome but strangely enough I could not put my finger in what to call the resulting behaviour as I discovered that many call it differently I stumbled on a word called memetic or meme it was the most probable answer for the solution does any one has a discription what a meme or memetic is

Jason has it. In layman’s terms, it’s an idea that spreads, more or less unaltered, into multiple minds– the mental equivalent of a gene.

An example: almost all religions believe in an eternal afterlife. Details on what it looks like, who ends up where and why vary, but the basic notion of an eternal hereafter is essentially the same. “Souls go someplace after death and remain there forever” is a meme shared by most religious people, despite other wild differences in their beliefs or practice.
