Look at the map. Do you see a difference between the size of Vermont and the size of South Carolina? Would the terrain (mountains) and transportation (foot, boat or horse) have anything to do with this? Look at the place names. Middle colonies have British place names, the South has Spanish place names, New England has French place names. Why? Look at the climate. Can you grow the same things in New Hampshire that you can grow in Georgia? Look at the culture. Why did people in Massachusetts frown on frivolity, while people in Virginia partied hearty?

The way education was conducted varied among the states. In New England, they stuck with the more traditional, elitist form of education centered strongly around religion. The middle colonies had a slightly weaker educational process because of the “melting pot” concept. They struggled with having a common type of education because of the pluralism that existed. Therefore, no common aims for education were there to hold the system together. The southern colonies had little education because of the rural and agricultural aspect. Most education occurred through the home or through manual labor. There were some “old field schools” where the children would meet with a teacher in a field or shack to have school. However, they did not meet frequently as it was typically a long distance for the children to travel.
