College/Financial aid question?

My friend is having a hard time getting into college and his advisors are asking him to agree to enroll/start classes before he knows if his grant is final. He told me that there is a 1k due next week. He wanted me to ask or get get opinions if he should go through with it.

*I say NO. That sounds a little too shaky to me*

What kind of a college is that? I’ve worked at a college for four years and never heard of anything like that. I would not agree to anything without knowing how much of my financial aid went through, he could end up owing a lot of money.

I’d start with the financial aid office at the school. Find out why he doesn’t know his financial aid eligibility and how soon he will. He should get an idea of what he is eligible to receive so he’ll know that he’ll have money to help pay his tuition and fees bill. If the school really wants him what’s the difference between enrolling now or waiting a week or two? If he feels he’s getting strong armed and is not comfortable with how things are going he can always walk away and look at another college. If he feels uncomfortable in the registration for classes process, how is he going to feel actually being a student?

Enroll.

Start the process for a small loan for the 1K, cancel it/return it if the grant pulls through.

Most colleges you enroll for classes well before you know your aid for the following semester. That way you actually get classes you want as opposed to getting all the ones that just aren’t full. Most colleges also have a refund policy. There’ll be a date in the semester where he can get a full or partial refund on the money he’s spent if he drops out before this date. He should know about the grant before this date.

Regardless, 1K is nothing in the scheme of an education. If he isn’t prepared to pay it, perhaps he should wait a little while and save up/build credit before embarking on his education.

Enrolling or starting classes before the grants are final is just a way of telling the school that he is set on attending the school whether or not the grants are available. it would help him into getting into the school but he might have to pay a larger portion of the tuition

Check the acrediation of the school. I allow students to start classes before financial aid is complete but that is because some students walk in the door, complete an application, complete a FAFSA and have class that night so it would be impossible for me to finalize everything.
