Careers in Foreign affairs…?

I’m in my last year of high school and I would love to work for Foreign Affairs for my country.

At the moment I take- English, Stats, Biology, PE, Geography and Tourism

My favourites would be Stats, Geo and Tourism

Next year I hope to study Human Geography, Sociology & Political Studies and do a Stats Paper. Coming out with a BA (hopefully honors)

I don’t speak another language.

Am I heading in the right direction to work for Foreign Affairs or an Embassy?

I think you’re on the right track. You should definitely take a foreign language in university to increase your chances. I don’t know what country you’re in, but in the US university students can get internships with US embassies and consulates in other countries over the summer. Also, to join the US foreign service, applicants must take an exam after graduating from university. Your country probably does the same thing.

In addition to political science courses, you should also take an economics/international business course since much of diplomacy deals with international trade. You may also want to take a course in international or immigration law since junior level foreign service employees are often the people who deal with visa/immigration/asylum applicants. Good luck!

I think you are on the right track, but if you are hoping for overseas postings a foreign language would help if you wish to go to a non English speaking country. Translators are always required.
