The medical field is highly competitive. Many superior pre-med students are turned down when they first apply to medical school. The better your grades, the better your chance, but don’t get discouraged. Many med students apply several times before being accepted.

Good luck…keep trying hard!

The way for you to know for sure is to practice taking the part of the MCAT (the entrance test for medical school) that has organic chemistry on it. If your score is low after taking it, that would be a pretty good sign that you would have a tough time getting into an allopathic medical school (leading to an M.D.). However, entrance requirements are not as stringent for osteopathic schools of medicine (leading to a D.O.). Look into that!

Also, if you’re interested in medicine, but not a fan of the hard sciences (chemistry, physics, stuff you need to master to do well on the MCAT), you should consider a medical career OTHER than being a doctor. The nation is extremely short on good nurses. Public health is a strong field. There are LOTS of medicine related fields for you to be in if you REALLY want to do medicine.

Could you? Yes. Can you? Probably not. Does that mean you should forego the dream? Nope.

Obviously, something didn’t connect for you in OChem. Presumably, you did okay in Inorganic. My compliments for going back and trying again. You might benefit from a tutor…or two. I can tell you from personal experience that Gen Chem was a major hurdle for me, until a friend spent an hour just talking to me about how he had learned it. My lightbulb went on and I did great. But for sure, don’t think that not grasping one subject will make you less of a physician. Most MD’s have areas of weakness.

The door may be closed to the most competetive schools, but talk to an academic advisor about attending your state university’s med school. If the advisor thinks you might have difficulty getting in there, there are alternatives. Many of the UK schools will let you into med school with a non-science degree. You can also get into most Caribbean med schools with less than stellar credentials.

Here’s the link to IMED (http://imed.ecfmg.org/). It will let you look up all the UK schools. The UK is different than the US in that each school has it’s own requirements. The Glasgow University in Scotland is one that I have heard that has easier admission standards (Now, I haven’t verified that for myself).

The Caribbean schools are known for their lower admissions standards. Check out ValueMD.com for forums for each of the schools. Of course, there will be links to each schools web site.

Good luck with things.

man, that’s tough. I’ve heard that most medical schools require grades of a C or higher in ur premed classes. I don’t think you “won’t” get in b/c your MCAT score is ridiculously high (kudos and congrats btw). I think you would have a reaaaly good shot at a DO school. Osteopathic doctors have a license to practice just as well and in many cases are more competitive for particular residencies. Don’t give up bro, keep pluggin at it and try that OChem class one more time at a community college or something. G’Luck.

Many med schools don’t accept grades lower than a C, but I would check with your adviser and the specific med schools you want to apply to.

Nope. You have to have a minimum of a C in all your classes.
