A spider’s an itinerant miniaturized laboratory. Some of them manufacture a silk thread that’s proportionnally much more resistant than steel or Kevlar, and more stretchable than Nylon. Sometimes the thread is so thin that no human manufacturing system has been able to compete with it so far.

At first made and stocked in ventral pouches, the silk goes out at demand along an S-shaped canal that gets narrower and narrower. Meanwhile, fibers are manufactured, the thread is assembled and made stronger. An exit orifice, situated at the back, corresponds to each pouch.

The thread quality may vary according to the climatic conditions, but it’s mostly according to the intended use that the spider switches its reels. The silk for the web won’t be the same as the one used to wrap the preys or the one to protect the eggs. The web frame, the secondary threads or the junction points are also of a different nature. Thus the spider chooses its thread by activating the silk pouch that’s the most appropriated for the occasion.

The shape of the webs varies according to the spider species, and is carried out following techniques that are specific to each of them. However, its building follows general principles and is always carried out following the same pattern:

– Find the passage path of the potential preys, and possible fixation spots.

– Check there is no spider already settled down in the area.

– Build the armature with strong thread, make a frame, then insert some radiuses.

– Weave a first spiral with non-sticky silk.

– Go over the spiral once again with sticky silk this time.

The work has been completed, now you just have to wait till your lunch comes. Normally, the webs are weaved every day, according to their dilapidation or their poor profit in preys.
