2a^2 – 17a + 30 = (2a – 5)(a – 6)

GPC
2x^2-17x+30

First see that we need something with this form:

(2x-a)(x-b)

we get:

2x^2-2bx-ax+ab

2x^(-2b-a)x +ab

so, must be:

-2b-a = -17 ——–(1)

ab = 30 ——–(2)

a= 30/b and using on the first

-2b-30/b+17 =0

or, multiplying by b

-2b^+17b-30=0

resolving we get the two roots

b1= 6 and b2= 2.5 (let’s say 5/2 for this one)

so a1=30/6 = 5 and a2 = 30/5/2 = 60/5 =12

and we can then write:

(2x-5)(x-6) and (2x-12)(x-5/2)

confirmation:

2x^2-12x-5x+30 = 2x^2-17x+30; ok

and

2x^2-2*5/2*x-12x+12*5/2 = 2x^2-5x-12x+60/2 = 2x^2-17x+30

ok.
