Can anyone explain the scaling system to me?? – education wise?

I’ve gotta pick my subjects to do in years 11 and 12, and people are telling me about the scaling system.. like when u pick a hard course, u getsclaed better?? what does that mean, and how does it work, (an example would be good too, please!!)
