Can anyone answer a few random questions I have about college?
How early should you arrive for class? Does it matter where you sit? And do professors call on random people like in high school? Also, what kind of bag is in on campuses? Tote bags…regular bookbags? Thanks!

Most of my students have backpacks.
Try to sit near the front and to the right if your professor is right handed so he does block the board when they write. To the left if their left handed. You will find out after the first day of classes. I like sitting about the 4th or 3rd row back so I will be able to see everything and hear the prof because I’ve had a few profs that spoke very softly.
Walk campus the day before classes start and find out where all your classes are so you won’t be wandering lost on the first day.
Most profs don’t call on people because they have a lot of material to cover in a short period of time. Ever now and again I had professors ask a question to the class and random people answered.
I used my old rucksack from the Army for a book bag in my first couple weeks of classes but campus hippies were always giving me dirty looks so I just bought a regular backpack with a special padded pocket for my laptop since the computer labs at my school are alway crowded.
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes because you will be doing a lot of walking from class to class especially on big campuses.
-Most professors like for you to be on-time, if not a little before class starts. Some of the strictest ones start class right when it’s supposed to, and some look down on those of us who aren’t always punctual.
-It doesn’t matter where you sit, unless your professor puts you in a particular place until he/she learns everyone’s name. There shouldn’t be assigned seats in college because now you are an adult and should be treated as one.
-Sometimes professors do call on random people. It depends on what kind of class it is. In lectures, you listen to a speaker and take notes. Some classes have notes that you can add to and follow along with the professor. Some are still like high school.
-There shouldn’t be any rules about bags on campus, unless the handbook says otherwise. I always carried a bookbag. Most residential and commuter students either carried bookbags, tote bags, or even just carried their books in their arms. In the wake of the VA Tech shootings, I can understand why this would be a concern on campus. You should be okay with anything.
Some people like sitting in the back, some in the front. If your eyes and ears aren’t great, sit closer to the front. To some extent, people will always talk in class, and it can be hard to hear in the back. I always sat in the back, though, because you can get away with clarifying things between your friends. Also, because I prefer having plenty of seat room.
Some professors will call on random people, some won’t. It depends on your course of study, the size of your classes, and your particular professor. The vast majority of my profs never called on random people. The few that did managed to call on me despite being in a large class. Go figure.
Regular backpacks are still in on campus. Use whatever makes you comfortable. This isn’t a matter of high fashion, and I guarantee that even if you took a purse somebody else will look stranger than you (I’m assuming you’re male).
I’d take at least a tote bag or back pack or carry my books if I’m just taking one class that time span.
Most don’t care where you sit. I was in on JC college English class in which she had a seating chart. YECH!
Some University classes are in 400 seat auditoriums with 200+ students
Do they call on you, absolutely. They love making fools of everyone on an equal basis!
