It depends on the perspective of those writing the history. If you check out Native America history you will find some different terminology. Try Dee Brown’s “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”

Also, “Trail of Tears” by Gloria Jahoda

“I Will Fight No More Forever: Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce War” by Merrill D. Beal

“Black Elk Speaks” by John G. Neihardt

Because nobody likes to lose.

Because the Indians (aka Native Americans) didn’t write history.

Because the people who did write history liked to portray the Indians as bloodthirsty savages.

Because the history-writers now are only calling it that because that’s how they know it.

Because history is written by the “victors.”

(FYI “Cavalry”)

If you want to see some stories from the other viewpoint, read “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee,” by Dee Brown.
