Second, what type of therapist did you want to be? Generally, there are three main types of professionals that do therapy: Social Workers, who typically will have Master’s degrees (4-6 years of school), Psychologists, who must have PhD’s (7-9 years of school), and Psychiatrists, who are MDs (~12 years of school w/residency).
Then you have the somewhat random people who just set up shop as therapists. Generally they’ll be college graduates who’ve majored in psychology or social work.
Do whatever will make you happiest. I know it took me forever to get out of undergrad because I kept switching majors. However, I now don’t have regrets about “the road not taken” and I’m thoroughly enjoying law school and looking forward to being a practicing attorney.
How about taking a intro to psych class at a local community college? It won’t be expensive, and it will give you an overview of the types of material you’d be covering and a more representative college experience.
