Anti-virus and my online backup (carbonite) saved my hide when my laptop crashed lst year!
Oh and my laptop lojack (tracking software) in case your laptop gets stolen…

Depends on the major. If your major requires designing or making publication, the Adobe Creative Suite is helpful. For making sketches, AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
