“CONNECTING GENERATIONS: How We Are Shaped by Our Times”:
Today, we often live in an age-segregated society. Other than the family, there are few opportunities for meaningful interaction between people of different ages. Students are placed in school groupings according to age, and their age and grade categories tend to follow them in their involvement in community settings. Young and middle-aged adults may work together, but there is a tendency to maintain social lives dominated by age peers. Older adults often find little opportunity to form friendships with others outside their own generation.
This concept of “connecting generations” is based on generational profiles. The EVENTS that happen during one’s first formative years shape that generation’s CHARACTERISTICS. When you are in situations with people of other generations, you will be most effective when you communicate with their characteristics in mind.
The four generations that will be discussed are:
WWII Generation
Born before 1940, they are sixty-six and over today.
Baby Boomers
Born 1940 to 1960, they are mostly in their forties, fifties, and early-sixties today.
Generation Xers
Born 1960 to 1980, they are in their twenties, thirties, and mid-forties today.
Millennials
Born 1980 to 2000, they are twenty-six and under today.
So…according to academics at Vanderbilt:
They are called the World War II Generation.
That Generation is also known as “The Greatest Generation”
since they “kept the world free” against the “evil” axis powers of WW II.
Per this Wikipedia link, people born between 1925-1942 are part of the “Silent Generation”.
The term “Silent Generation” was coined in a Time article in 1951 about this generation. They were the generation between the “Get It Done – GI Generation” and the “Boomers”.
The name gain more credence with William Manchester’s comment that this generation was “withdrawn, cautious, unimaginative, indifferent, unadventurous & silent”.
