let malays = 28x… so that the ratio of chinese to malays is 5:7
let indians = 21x…. in order for ratio of indians:malys to be 3:4
The total persons at the meeting = 20x + 28x + 21x = 69x
“One-fifth of the persons left (after 36 Indians leave) ARE Indians” can be represented by the following mathematical statement…
(69x – 36)/5 = 21x – 36
now to eliminate the denom. of “5”, multiply the above equation through by “5” to get…
69x – 36 = 105x – 180
now solve for “x”…
First add “+180” to both sides… like this…
(69x – 36) + 180 = (105x – 180) + 180
Now combine “like” terms to get…
69x + 144 = 105x
which is the same as saying…
105x = 69x + 144
Now add “-69x” to both sides…. like this…
105x – 69x = (69x + 144) – 69x
Combine “like” terms to get…
36x = 144
Divide both sides by 36…
36x/36 = 144/36
So… x = 4
Remember at beginning we stated…
let chinese = 20x
let malays = 28x
let indians = 21x…. in order for ratio of indians:malys to be 3:4
Therefore, there were…
Chinese = 20x = 20(4) = 80 persons
Malays = 28x = 28(4) = 112 persons
Indians = 21x = 21(4) = 84 persons
…. for a total of 276 persons….
Chinese to Malays…80:112=5:7…because 5×16=80 and 7×16=112
Indians to Malays… 84:112=3:4…because 3×28=84 and 4×28=112
There are 276 persons altogether…
When 36 Indians leave… there are 276-36 persons left or 240 persons
(because you started with 276 persons total.. and 36 Indians left)
When 36 Indians leave… there are 84-36 Indians left… or 48 persons
(because you started with 84 Indians total… and 36 of them left)
“48 Indians left /240 total persons left” is the same as saying “1/5 of the group are Indians”… because 48×5= 240 persons that are left…. that is, 48 is 1/5 of 240… or 48 / 240 = 1/5…. however you want to look at it…
Hope this helps!!! =)
