assure/ensure?

Don’t say that I am stupid, but I really cannot distinguish and use the two words “assure and ensure” appropriately.

So could you tell me how to use them and give me some examples? Thanks a lot. 🙂

Assure means to say something with confidence.

I assure you (with confidence) that your order will be ready by 5PM.

Ensure means to make certain that something happens.

I will ensure (make sure) that there will be no further delay.

The two are actually synonymous. Assure is a verb and it means to promise or guarantee something. Ensure is essentially the same – it means to certify or or make sure of something.

Sentences:

The carnival worker assured me that the ride was safe.

I bought a ticket for the concert to ensure that I would have a good seat.

Ensure – is to make sure that something will happen, for example… One can say: Today I’ll ensure I tell the Teacher that I need his help.

Assure – to make somebody confident – to overcome somebody’s doubt or disbelief about something e.g. I can assure you that every word is true.
