Means hopeful, optimistic. His happy, optimistic mindset turns small bright things into enormous lights with the ability to brighten from millions of miles away. It’s just another way to say he always sees the potential for good rather than the limitations of a situation.

In medieval times, physicians thought there were four main body fluids. They called those four body fluids, “humors”. They considered these fluids or “humors” to be responsible for our health and mood/personality/disposition. The four humors were: Blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile. Physicians thought they could determine a person’s mood or personality by signs and symptoms revealing prevalence of one or more of these four humors. People with ruddy cheeks or rosy complexions, were dominated by the humor of Blood. That meant they were robust and passionate and cheerful and such. Black bile prevalence meant melancholy. Yellow bile meant anger and irritability. And, phlegm meant inflammation.
The ancient Latin word for “blood” is SANGUINEUS which morphed into sanguine over time. Doyle’s use of the word “sanguine” refers to the four humors, indicating disposition/mood/personality, not the color red like blood because, as the line reads, “His sanguine spirit (personality/mood/disposition) turns every firefly into a star.”
