Your age doesn’t matter, it’s the number of college (read, university) credits you have. More important is that you’re an international student. Every school’s website, under admissions, will have a special section for international applicants, explaining the process for you.
As for age 24 – at some schools, you’ll be one of the younger students in class!
In the US, there are a few programs for “mature students”, specifically, but in general, you’ll apply just like anyone else of any age. You’ll have 18 year olds in your classes, and also 65 year olds. Many schools do offer special residence halls for older students, if you’d like, so you can ask about that. There are also sometimes special scholarships, but because you’re Irish, you likely won’t qualify (because you’re international.)
As for good colleges in NY, here are some of the best:
– New York University
– Columbia University
Which are two of the top schools in the world.
Here are other strong schools:
– Manhattan College
– CUNY Hunter College
– CUNY Baruch
– Fordham University
And, if you’re willing to look outside NYC proper, also look at: Manhattanville College, Rutgers, Princeton, Drew University, SUNY Binghamton, Rensselaer Polytechnic, Yale, Hofstra, Syracuse, Cornell, Hamilton, Ithaca, and… there are a ton more, but these will get you started.
I don’t know anything about New York but if you are open to the challenges and opportunities of going on a new adventure, I doubt that your age will have much of an impact on your performance.
Best of luck.
