First and foremost, have fun. It’s an amazing time where you have a ton of freedom and a ton of responsibility.

My advice would be to focus on your classes the most. Many freshmen have trouble the first semester because they don’t take college classes seriously. They’re not easy. I’m not trying to worry you or anything, but you have to know they’re typically not easy.

Second, join some clubs. You’ll meet a ton of cool people with the same interests as you. I would get real involved in one club, and somewhat involved in a second one. Some of my best friends are from clubs I’ve joined in school.

Third, relax. College can be really really really fun and buzy, so take time to relax. Over the weekend, sleep in. You’ll thank yourself over the rest of the week because you won’t be tired but your classmates will be.

But above all, make sure to have some fun. Balance school and social life, and you’ll be fine and have some awesome memories.

Understand that you will be responsible for yourself. Nobody will tell you to go to class, study or do your homework. And there are so many distractions! Every day there will be something fun to do. People will offer you alcohol and drugs and give you a hard time if you say no. It may seem like everyone is having sex. It will take discipline to stay focused on your school work. The college years are a time of great changes and growth. You should have fun and expand your horizons. But remember you’re there to get an education.

Watch your money. You won’t believe how fast it goes. Get plenty of rest and exercise. Eat as healthy as you can. And remember there is lots of help available. If you have a problem or a question of any kind, ask. There are people all over whose job is to make it easier for you.

Call or write home as often as you can. They will miss you.
