Q: Explain how you know that the calorie consumption varies linearly with temp. What is the slope? Write the equation.

use the points you know to draw the graph, extrapolate it to get the intercept with the x axis and use the point slope form or Y = mx + b.
You have to trust Lansburg for the linear nature of the relationship. I would guess that the real relationship is not linear.
Use rise/run to calculate the slope (it just could be 1/30 – what do you think)
your equation would need to be in y=mx + b
so far it would be y=30x + b
the you need to substiture something for x and y that is a coordinate on the graph. x would be 30 and y would be 1 so
1=30(30) +b
1=900+b
-899=b
equation = y=30x-899
ps)not positive equations right
temp the x-axis. Then the slope of the line is rise over run. Rise on the y-axis (calories) versus (divided by) run on x-axis.
Like draw a step of stairs on the line.
And use the height of the steps divided by the length of the steps for the slope.
