AIU Online is on accreditation probation…what?
I recently applied to AIU (yesterday) and afterwards saw that the school is on probation. I wrote an e-mail to my academic advisor and student affairs to say I would not be attending the school. My advisor then called me to say “You didn’t know about that?” If I had known, then I wouldn’t have applied! But does anyone know about how probation works? They’ve been on probation since 2005, and I’ve heard that they only give you two years. If anyone has any knowledge on the subject, please let me know.

Do NOT attend a university that is not accredited. You should not have gotten that flip answer from the advisor, your question should be: When will you finish your accreditation process? If they do not know, RUN. Probation means they are under review , they are either being accredited for the first time or they failed to meet an accreditation standard that they had previously met. This might mean they do not have qualified teachers, or good records, or enough class time. The easiest way for you is to find out who is accrediting them , contact that agency and ask why and when they will be reviewed. Accreditation is your only way to know your credits are valid and will be accepted elsewhere. Many colleges do not accept COURSES from other accredited colleges but do accept the credits. You want your degree to mean something. There are many online univerisity programs that are accredited such as University of Phoenix, ITT Tech, Caplan, etc. For extra safety if there is a brick and mortar school and campus that is part of their system, you are usually much safer.

Hadn’t you read some of us on here cautioning students about certain schools? This was one.
