ACT Score Question?

My test scores came back for the ACT. I got a 34 (English: 34, Math: 35, Reading: 32, Science 34). All of these are in the 96+ percentile. That made me extremely happy, since I’m applying to various prestigious schools. I took the optional writing section and got a 6 (the 25th percentile).

The college I’m applying to early admission doesn’t require the writing test. Do you think that score is enough to kick me out of serious consideration if all my other stuff (grades, strength of schedule, extracurriculars, leadership) are up to snuff.

If the schools you are applying to do not require the Writing Test, then that probably means that they do not trust it as a measure of students’ writing ability. Accordingly, I would not worry about it.

Admittedly a 6 is a bad score given everything else in your ACT report, so I understand your concern but I do not think that the Writing Test will figure into the admissions formulas and therefore should not affect you.

Honestly, if you are really concerned have a friend, who is not applying to those schools, call up the admissions office and ask the question: “how bad is it?” There are no consequences for you since you aren’t calling and your friend won’t care b/c he is not applying there anyway.

Seriously though, I would not worry about it. Worry about your app, worry about your personal statement, but don’t worry about a crappy essay score when the school does not require its submission.

With scores like that you could get into any school you want. You may want to consider something a little more technically minded like MIT since they don’t hardly even check the writing scores.
