They start at the same time from the same location and travel in the same direction. How long will it take for the faster car to travel 42 miles farther than the slower car?

Distance equals speed time time.

The cars will have traveled the same amount of time when the faster one is 45 miles further from the common starting point, which they left at the same moment.

D1=52t

D2=45t

D1-D2=42

52t-45t=42

7t=42

t=6
