Yes, it’s important. It’s new, but more and more universities are looking at the writing part as well as the older math and verbal/critical reading parts.

However, it’s important to note that the timed writing itself isn’t all that important. Some of the “English” multiple choice questions add into the “writing” score.

I only got 8 out of 12 on my actual written thing, which isn’t all that great. But I didn’t miss any of the “writing” section questions, so I got a 780 on writing. Which is nice. The number 8 still shows up somewhere on the grade report, but the numbers out of 800 are all that matter.

Good luck!

Since it is so new, some colleges still disregard it since it’s still basically in the testing phase in their minds. However, the Ivies & those close to them are now putting some weight on that section, although they still don’t consider it as important as the Verbal or Math sections.

Bottom line is that you want to do well on it. The other two sections will probably make up for it if you do great on those & not so great on writing, but you still want to prove that you could conquer this new section.

um actually, at all of the colleges i visited this summer (duke, vanderbilt, emory, princeton, brown and yale) they all said that becuase the writing section was relatively new, yes they will consider it when comparing similar applicants, but they only seriously look at the math and critical reading scores because they have been around for a long time, whereas the writing section is only 2 years old. and if you look at most colleges’ websites, they have median math and verbal scores only. Not writing.

Since the writing section on the SAT is relatively new, colleges want to know that potential applicants are fluent in their writing, so yes, it is quite important. If you got a lower score on it, but decent scores on your math and verbal, it won’t harm you, but they will definitely look at it to make sure you’re able to form coherent ideas to support the thesis.

The writing is just as important as mathematics and critical reading. Universities want someone who can put their thoughts on paper. That is why many want the ACT+writing if you do not take the SATs.

Yes, it is. My math score was so-so, but I was the 2nd highest critical thinking & writing scores in my school: they got me into an almost Ivy League university.
