Regarding AP scores and colleges…?

Got my AP scores back, didn’t fail anything, but I got a 3 on Eng Lang and Comp, which I’m not that happy about. I’ll be applying to colleges in a couple months, and I know on the app you don’t have to include your AP scores if you don’t want to. In my school, if you take an AP class than you MUST take the AP test…

If I don’t list any AP scores, I’m afraid it’ll look like I failed everything, but I didn’t. Then again, if I list my other AP test and don’t list English, it won’t look good either. And if I list English, I’m afraid that colleges will look upon that really badly. The schools I’m planning to apply to include Carnegie Mellon, NYU, pretty much schools in that range – selective, but not highly selective.

My grade in my AP Eng class was pretty good, but I don’t know if the grade will outweigh the AP score, especially since the class is subjective while the test is not.

So, basically, does anyone have any advice as to what I should do with the app and score?

You should include all of your AP scores. You did pass the test! A 3 isn’t as good as a 4 or a 5, but it’s still passing, and reflects well on you. Only 5 or 6 percent of the people who take that test actually get 5s (http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/english_lang/dist.html?englang ).

Most colleges look mainly at your AP classes for admission. The fact that you took AP classes shows that you’re committed to your education and willing to try hard. AP scores are used for placement and credit. Even if you don’t get college credit for your 3 on the test, it looks good that you tried, and you DID pass the test.

AP scores aren’t really used for college admissions. Just the fact that you took AP classes makes your chances better in getting into a good college. The scores are primarily used for whether you have to take collge credit or not in a certain class. If you score a 4 or 5, you may be exempt from taking a quarter or semester of that class in college. Low AP scores don’t make your chances worse for getting into a college. They are just used for determining college credit and not college admission.

AP scores are strictly for placement–they don’t have any effect on admissions. Well, that’s what they say. I think you should still submit it. Not submitting it implies to colleges that you’re either hiding a 1 or 2 or didn’t even bother taking the test (and took the class to pad your GPA–that doesn’t really apply to you since your school requires you to take them, but colleges don’t know that). So it makes your grade in that class pretty credible, and you’ll be better off than someone with the same grade who didn’t report a score for whatever reason.

I’d list them all. It least they know you tried. A 3 isn’t that bad!

Anyway- you could list all the other scores and not that 1. I only took 1 AP test. No one questioned me on it. Most people who apply DON’T have any AP scores!

oh yeah- and colleges do take notice. I got 3 credits for my AP score at my college.

Just report it on your application. Colleges usually consider passing scores to be a plus on your college application, even if you did not get the score desired for credit. failing scores aren’t really considered a negative (there are so many variables that can influence scores, like the quality of the teacher or you just having a bad day). One of my friends still made it into UVA even though she ended up with a 2 on one of her AP exams (and she had an A in the class). UVA does ask you to self report your AP scores on the application.

The same thing happened to me, I got a five on all my AP classes but Eng Lang. I have heard from friends that you have to send all your AP scores or none at all, so I am going to send all of mine, I think it will look good that you did well on some.

Just report them all. A 3 isn’t that bad, and it’s actually passing, good enough for credit, at some colleges. Leaving out your scores is a mistake, ’cause it looks good that you took all of those high-level classes and did well in them. The worst they can think is “hey, here’s a really smart student who did really well in a bunch of AP stuff, though slightly less well, but still passable, in English.”

I don´t think that you really should be concerned with a three on an AP, ecpecially if your not applying to ultra selective schools. A three is equivelent to a C, B- grade which isnt good, but is certainly not failing
