The latter.
AP Exam grades are “extra” and have nothing to do with college entrance.
At least, they aren’t supposed to; they are looked upon as “rigorous” and colleges like “rigorous” high school schedules.
Don’t worry- the fact that you took it to begin with means you have an advantage over someone who didn’t.
Also, offering credit is up to particular colleges- some go as low as 3 to accept grades (maybe lower) while others will except nothing less than a 5 on most subjects.

AP grades have nothing to do with getting into college. If you get a 4 or 5, you may get credit for the course in college.

AP exam grades of 4 and 5 (and sometimes 3) could be considered a “plus” on your college applications for some institutions. However, universities won’t look on them negatively if your scores are not so good. You won’t get any college credit for 1s and 2s.

It just means you won’t get the credit in college; AP exams have nothing to do with admission. The only standardized tests most colleges or universities care about are the SAT and/or ACT.
A 2 is nothing to worry about, it just means you’ll have to take the class in college 🙂
