In the PSAT, what selection index score do I need to qualify for the semifinalists?

Well, it says the top 16,000 scores, but what score on the PSAT do I need to aim for to be in the top 16,000?

It’s different for every state, and different each year. In my state for me the cutoff was only 208, and I doubt it would be higher than 215 anywhere. Once you get that high, we’re all in the 99th percentile.

It’s always a royal pain to try to find any useful information at all on NMSC’s website:

College board has some information about the selection indexes for 2006, but not exactly what you’re looking for: http://www.collegeboard.com/prof/counselors/tests/psat/sindex.html

That depends on the state you live in. Different states have different cutoffs. It will be well into the 2000s. The top 5% only makes you a commended student.

most often, you must get between 210 and 240. However, it depends on the state you live in. If you’re in the 95th percentile or above, you’re probably a semifinalist.

It differs by each state and what was the split. For example it can be 232 at california and a 223 in idaho. it differs each year also. its very very hard. basically you have to be in the top 1% of the state.
