Who is Rote Memorization used for?? Help quixk!?

I learned my tables and the alphabet by rote. Later I understood what was behind the tables but I knew them by rote first.

In the USA, kids learn the presidents, by rote. Songs and poems are learned by rote.

Rote is for anyone. Understanding often comes after the rote learning.

Rote memorization is used by anyone and everyone to have information available immediately (from memory) without having to look it up in a book or on a web site. it is a very mechanical process used to stuff information into your head rather than learning how to derive the information.

It is strongly discouraged by many new curriculum standards. I generally only use rote learning for remediate kids, for learning things such as their spelling words or multiplication tables.

Average students may find some benefit in that, but they should really be learning WHY things are the way they are (eg: rote learning might tell you that 5×5=25, but students should really be learning what 5×5 means, and why it is 25).

Gifted students should never need to learn anything be rote.
