I think what you are referring to is LAKE TURKANA MAN (not one word)–the fossils of an early form of mankind known as HOMO HABILIS (which means “handy man” because he was the first of the Homo–or man–species to use and make tools) that were found by Richard Leakey at Lake Turkana in Kenya. Richard’s father is the noted anthropologist, Louis S.B. Leakey, whose major discoveries were found in Tanzania’s OLDUVAI GORGE.

Homo habilis lived approximately 2.5 to 1.8 million years ago at the beginning of the Pleistocene era, and his fossils were first found by Louis and Mary Leakey between 1962 and 1964. Habilis was the least similar to modern humans of all the species that were placed under the genus Homo. Habilis was short in height, and had unusually long arms; his face did not protrude as much as earlier species; and his brain/cranial capacity was a little less than 1/2 the size of modern humans.

In Wikipedia, look under Homo Habilis or Lake Turkana.
