A miscarriage of justice sees Stanley Yelnats [notice the palindrome?] sent to a detention centre for young boys called Camp Green Lake.

Stanley, who was wrongly accused of theft, attributes his bad luck to a curse that began with his “no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-grandfather” and has since followed generations of Yelnats family members.

There, he and his fellow inmates are forced to dig a hole everyday in the dried up desert, with only very limited supplies of food and water. Their holes must be five feet wide and five feet deep and there’s no escape as they’re in such an isolated area. The Warden of Green Lake describes thier back-breaking labor as “character building.”

Stanley soon realizes that this isn’t the real reason the “campers” are being subjected to such harsh treatment.

The boys are digging holes because the warden is looking for something, and Stanley does his best to literally dig up the truth.

Apparently, Green Lake has a heartbreaking history. It appreared that it is where “Kissing Kate” (so called because she has a penchant for giving all her victims a big, sloppy kiss) buried all her ill-gotten gains.

The story cleverly weaves together past and present, local history with family lore. In his search for the truth, Stanley discovers a hidden treasure, the power of friendship, and his own inner strength. It is friendship, the reader learns, that ultimately has the power to reverse the century-old curse.

Suffice it to say that Stanley gets to the bottom of the holes (metaphorically speaking) and manages to turn his history of bad luck around.

It actually depends on the way ur teacher is interpreting.

If she means the literal meaning then the answer would be that the camp leaders….the lady. i kinda forgot her name…but anyway she believes that there is a treasure in the land where the kids are digging holes. and the whole point of digging the holes is to find that treasure buried by kissing kate barlow. if u actually read the book u would understand this. But in another way…kids are sent to this camp to dig holes as a punishment for doing something wrong. And the court thinks if they stand in the middle of no where digging holes with the hot sun above them…they might learn a lesson. But the main reason would be to find the treasure of kissing kate barlow. But it ends up where stanley gets it …since he technically owns it. since kate barlow took it from his grandfather. I hope this make sense. If not you might wanna read the book again…then you will understand it.

Good luck and god bless!
