Eastern Europeans have allowed themselves to live under the thumb of others for decades. Now, owing to the stupid EU they are all flocking to Britain. We don’t need them and we don’t want them in our islands

Hello! I must say that I find the above quote about as meaningful as “California is a political region more than a physical region.” Of course, you have not given the context or identified the speaker. If the person you are quoting is telling you that Eastern European countries, since the fall of the “Iron Curtain” and since some of them have experienced democratic and economic reform, are becoming more important members of the world economic community, that is absolutely true. If the speaker’s intention was to point out that each country which has or is hoping to join the European Union has had to give up some part of it former political sovereignty by agreeing to abide by decisions made by the majority, that is also true. You have not stated your own nationality, but I believe that many of us in the United States are very poorly informed about major changes which have been sweeping Europe, I believe for the better.

As a retired foreign language teacher, I have kept my eye on what is happening and have tried to direct my student’s attention their for several decades. Here are some links to two of twelve lessons designed for secondary teachers to use with their students. The purpose of the lessons is to gain an insight into the history, present and future of the European Union. Check it out. Please be aware though that each of these countries has still retained their own languages, their own cultures, etc., but life-styles of the inhabitants and the economies of these countries have been impacted in very major ways, not just by a conversion to a different currency.

I disagree…I live in Eastern Europe and I think that political views change, but people remain the same…my country has a beautiful green scenery that deserves to be seen and the fact that Communists ruled this country for many years is just a political happening…I think…

I would agree. The east has lived under totalitarian rule for so long (including the Austro-Hungarian Empire), that I think their mindset is different from those in the west.
