Find the first and third quartiles, Q1 and Q3, of the following set of numbers 350, 241, 153, 396, 245, 599,?

259, 225, 321

Please help me figure out how to do this

First, you have to put the numbers in order from least to greatest.

153, 225, 241, 245, 259, 321, 350, 396, 599

Then you find the middle one (median) of the set.

This is 259.

So, removing your median your lower half is

153, 225, 241, 245

And the middle (median) of the lower half (also called the lower quartile, or Q1) is right between 225 and 241. Add the two numbers together and you get 466, then divide by two (since you added two numbers) and you get 233. This is your Q1

For the upper quartile, Q3, you do the same thing.

321, 350, 396, 599

350+396=746

746/2=373

(If only one number is in the middle, you don’t have to do the add and divide thing.)
