That quotation sounds suspiciously like the old adage, “Necessity is the mother of all invention.”

If something is needed, SOMEONE will invent it. I recall my own grandfather. He worked for the NY Times Facsimile Company as an engineer. He was working on a machine that would send a “copy” of a newspaper’s page over the telephone wires from the NY Times to their sister publication, the LA Times. As a young girl, my mother never understood the “need” for such a device… why did you “need” to send the newspaper page that QUICKLY from NY to LA?

If you haven’t figured this out yet, the NY Times Fascimilie Company people had created what we now simply call the FAX machine!!! MY GRANDFATHER helped to CREATE the FAX machine! Can you imagine not having a fax machine in today’s culture? Just think of the impact on the economic, legal, business, financial, oh.. just about any aspect of our society, if there was no FAX machine?

But as my mother asked so long ago, “WHY does anyone NEED such a machine?” Maybe if you try answering that question, you might go far in your analysis of the quotation you have been given.
